Covers chapter 2:8-11. The Church of Smyrna - the persecuted church. We often have a view of Christianity that sees abundance of material possessions as being the blessing of God... however this church was dirt poor and it's believers faced great financial difficulties and yet Jesus says they are rich! Have we got the values of this world or of Christ? In an age where churches are judged by how much money they have and what programs they have to offer, and how big their Easter and Christmas productions are... it is indeed refreshing to have a reality check and see that Jesus does not judge churches like that! The Lord encourages these extremely poor believers in the face of great pressure, poverty, and persecution to be faithful until death and not to fear what this world will bring against them. A sobering message on the true cost of discipleship in a day when many are being entertained in churches and a wake up call to those who have a religious walk with God rather than a personal relationship.
